Anaheim, CA (March 1, 2018)
When: Saturday, March 24, 2018, from noon to 4
What: Beer Festival
Where: Anaheim Packing District Farmers Park
Non-Profit Supporting: Anaheim Fall Festival and Halloween Parade
Funds Raised for non-profit thus far: over $40,000
Unique Factor: All cask beers are made for the event, to be drank there, and possibly never again.
New this year: The well-respected OC Bartenders Cabinet will be shaking up actual Tiki cocktails for demonstration and sampling. Several bartenders are teaming up with breweries to also collaborate on tropical/tiki-style cask beers.
Why? Of the hundreds of different flavors of beer, a large portion can be described as “tropical”. Whether it be IPAs bursting with mango, pineapple, or passion fruit hoppy notes; stouts with Pina Colada and Mai Tai vibes, or even Belgian-style beers with Zombie cocktail overtones...don’t be surprised to see this year’s Firkfest beers to include “aged in rum barrel” or have actual barbecued pineapple making up the event’s beers.
“Looking at the previous three Firkfest events, I saw a common denominator: tropical-style beers seemed to stand out. As a huge cocktail nerd that loves Tiki culture, it’s time for the area’s craft brewers to come together, throw on some grass skirts, and make something truly unique,” says founder, organizer, and local beer writer Greg Nagel, @OCBeerBlog.
Beer’s like Mikkeller’s Beer Geek Tiki Land with caramelized pineapple and toasted coconut, Barley Forge’s The Pasty aged on rum soaked oak, or even six cheeky British style real ale casks from Yorkshire Square, Macleod Ale Brewing, and Inland Wharf Brewing, the event will be a mix of modern craft beer culture, it’s extremes, and perfect authenticity down to what one might drink at the Great British Beer Festival in London.
But are the beers warm and flat? Not at all! All beers arrive cold and are bursting with carbonation.
Tickets are $50 including fees, all profits supporting the historic Anaheim Fall Festival and Halloween Parade, an event that celebrates a 95-year history. Event tickets are extremely limited, as the producer keeps things intimate. “It’s a park-like atmosphere, where people chill on beach blankets and chairs,” says fest-man Nagel.
Food vendors include Adya: Fresh Indian Flavors is bringing tropical Kebab and nacho-like pineapple chaat, Urbana with tacos and elotes, The Butchery with sliders and sausage, Promenade Pub with delicious sandwiches, and Lido Bottle Works (TBD).
Tiki DJ Ken from the cocktail syndicate will be spinning a variety of exotica, marimba, and modern tunes to fling frisbees and hula hoops by.
Firkfest is rated five stars everywhere. Press and industry professionals love the event. Come to Firkfest. Wear a Hawaiian shirt or a mumu and sample from a row of fifty casks on the Packing District boardwalk. Let us know if you would like to attend.
