Five Winter Beers to Try Now in Anaheim

Photos and story by Greg Nagel

A true winter ale can best be described as being rich and malty, with a kick of higher heart-warming alcohol, and a mistletoe kiss of holiday spice to help get you through the chilly evenings and cheery parties. But there are no hard rules when it comes to crafting one, as displayed by the vastly different styles gift-wrapped for your enjoyment.

Here’s five Anaheim-brewed winter ales worth seeking out this season.

Noble Ale Works' Nice Sauce

Although Naughty Sauce is probably Anaheim’s most famous beer for being a blonde stout with soul-awakening local Portola Coffee, the beer makes an excellent base for tweaking the recipe to fit the seasons. Their winter version, called Nice Sauce, smells like a coffee shop that’s baking gingerbread at the same time. The smooth beer is poured on nitro for extra cappuccino-like smoothness, and can even give you a beer-stache after the first sip. 1621 Sinclair St B, Anaheim noblealeworks.com

Unsung Brewing's St. Nick R Doodle

Drawing inspiration for a beer can come from anywhere, and during the holidays, that can mean a snickerdoodle cookie dusted with red and green sprinkles. Unsung looked to replicate the classic German cookie in liquid form with a touch of cinnamon, vanilla and milk sugar to bake into this festive blonde beer. Some even think it tastes like Cinnamon Toast Crunch! 500 S Anaheim Blvd, Anaheim unsungbrewing.com

Anaheim Brewery's Winter Wheat

Anaheim Brewery is known for their rustic German-style beers, most notably their Hefeweizen that’s crafted with wheat and Bavarian yeast. Late in the year, they change it up into a dunkelweizen (dark wheat) beer that adds a touch of caramel to the banana-clove notes from the Hefe, which makes it a dark and heady version with a touch more alcohol to keep the caroling fun. 336 S Anaheim Blvd, Anaheim anaheimbrew.com

Bottle Logic's Yule Thief

Keeping the tradition of altering a base beer to match the season, Bottle Logic’s play on their Berliner Weiss-style tart beer called Joule Thief takes on a classic cranberry-orange relish vibe. There aren’t too many cranberry-based beers in the world, and this one is slightly pink and full of vibrant bright flavors that are worthy of any holiday table. 1072 N Armando St, Anaheim bottlelogic.com

The Bruery's 12 Days of Christmas Set

Over the last twelve years, The Bruery released a holiday seasonal to be sipped and cellared throughout the holidays. On the recent release of Twelve Drummers Drumming, they announced that they rebrewed each of the first eleven years of beers to be enjoyed out of a festive twelve-pack that even plays the classic Christmas song when opened! 1174 N Grove St, Anaheim brueryterreux.com
