Pouring It On…Exploring Anaheim's Best Wine Bars

November 12, 2015

Craft breweries have become the mantra here in Anaheim, with even more on the way. But, don’t fret wine lovers—Anaheim and Orange County also have a blossoming wine scene chock-full of options for any occasion. From down-home to laid back and even “pinky finger in the air” elegant—we’ve highlighted a few wine bars worth considering for a memorable night out.

Anaheim Packing District & Center St. Promenade:

BXCR Wine Bar- The Underground Wine Society: Can you remember the last time you drank wine in a boxcar? If you answer no—then maybe BXCR Wine Bar needs to be your next stop. At BXCR, they believe that a fine wine experience is not just about selecting great wines, but delivering the perfect wine experience. Take a trip back to simpler times in an authentically outfitted 1920’s vintage railroad boxcar with all the accouterments that you’d expect of the time period.

BXCR boast plenty of seating options and the opportunity to play chess and checkers as you discover new wines. BXCR’s well-trained and friendly staff can guide even the newest wine drinkers to the right flight, glass or carafe. Their selection curates some of the best tasting wines from around the globe with a strong focus on small lot and artisanal producers. They also have a small food menu that begins after 5:00 pm.

Colony Wine Merchant: A duel-purpose wine shop and lounge—Colony Wine Merchant is steps from the heart of downtown Anaheim. Owner Sonya Kelsen, felt that it was important to pay homage to the early days of Anaheim by adoring the walls with the city’s first wine makers including Benjamin Dreyfus, a past city councilmember and mayor. Colony Wine Merchant is also passionate about developing close relationships with the producer and winemakers. With a focus on family-owned, Colony regularly hosts an intimate wine paring event that brings together winemakers and wine lovers.

On the beer front, husband Mike Kelsen’s passion radiates into a deep selection of beer in bottles and on tap. Colony also serves a few food items and partner with local restaurants and cheese shops to keep their guest nice and full. Here are a few of the weekly offers and happenings:

  • Daily: 4-7 pm $5 craft beer & fine wine
  • Wine Wednesday: 1/2 off wine flights
  • Thirsty Thursday: $5 craft beer on draft
  • Tuesday and Sunday: Live music from 5:30-9:30 p.m.

Gypsy Den Café + Bar: Located along the charming Center Street Promenade, this restaurant has an ambiance all of its own. Think eclectic neighborhood hangout with a mixture of picture, frames and novelties usually uncovered in grandma’s attic—giving the Gypsy Den a vibe that is authentic and completely unique. Guests are welcome to pull up a chair next to a stranger, make friends and sample a range of food and drink well into the evening. The chef serves up a range of soups, salads and sandwiches, with a nice selection of veggie options, including home made chili & marinated vegetables. They offer a wide range of wine, beer and cocktails.

Wine Fix Near the Anaheim Convention Center Campus & Disneyland® Resort:

Anaheim Convention Center Campus: Just steps from the Anaheim Convention Center are an impressive number of hotels and restaurants offering wine and a perfect setting to try something new. By proximity, the Hilton Anaheim and Marriott on Convention Way are by far the easiest to get to for convention center attendees. The Mix Lounge at the Hilton Anaheim and nFuse Bar & Kitchen at the Anaheim Marriott are both modern and relaxing spots for a glass of wine, cocktail or a bite to eat.

nFuse Bar And Kitchen at the Anaheim Marriott is great for larger crowds and offers California cuisine influenced by cultures around the globe. They boast an impressive selection of microbrews, 65+ varieties of whiskey, premier wines and handcrafted cocktails.

Mix Lounge at the Hilton Anaheim is the contemporary centerpiece of Hilton's atrium lobby and a sleak spot to meet over a glass of wine. Also, large screen TV’s make this a perfect spot to gather with friends and associates during game night.

Downtown Disney®: The Uva Bar and Café can be found downstairs from the Catal Restaurant and offers both indoor and outdoor seating. With a full bar, premium draft beers, over 40 wines by the glass, tasty tapas and daily happy hours, Uva Bar is a well-heeled meeting spot to convene and converse.

Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel® & Spa: A favorite in Anaheim is the Napa Rose Lounge. Renowned chef Andrew Sutton has been telling the story of Napa Valley through his cuisine for over ten years. The servers are also well versed to carry out this story. Most have their sommelier certification and paired with an award-winning wine list—most oenophiles might have met their match.

Additional Anaheim Favorites:

THE RANCH Restaurant: THE RANCH'S wine program features a ginormous cellar of 14,000+ bottles and a world-class selection of wine that they serve in a friendly, approachable manner. Many of the wait-staff have completed their level two exams from the Court of Master Sommeliers. The wine list proudly features world-class wines and with 500+ different labels on the menu, it can be a bit overwhelming. They also have a very nice selection of wines by the glass, which is my way of trying something new!

Calivino Wine Pub: Offers 30 wines by the glass and bottle. With a menu that features a lovely selection of sought after wines from Italy, France and other global spots we know and love. For $15 they have both red and white flights which change daily and include three 3-oz pours, giving guests a chance to try something new. The staff is also super friendly, and the pub has a cozy atmosphere with lots of seating options—from the bar, high tables, dining tables and comfy couches.

Yves’ Restaurant and Wine Bar: This wine bar offers a multi award winning wine list and wines that span across the world. They have two big screens that play classic movies and sporting events from time to time. They also feature live music on the weekends. Yves' prices are value-driven, offering guests a large selection of wines by the glass as well. With a focus on the fine details, quality and service, they strive to have a guest’s wine bar and dining experience to be affordable, yet unforgettable.
